“I started my journey in American Kenpo in 2022 when the British Kenpo Karate Union firs t opened its UFFCULME Club. Immediately I was massively impressed by the knowledge and skill of the Instructors and was amazed that this martial art was available in a tiny Village in Devon. As a child and a young adult I studied various martial arts, from Japanese Karate and Judo to Ninjitsu and finally an authentic Kung Fu. But life got in the way and I had an 18 year break and in all honesty hadn’t realised how much I missed it. Starting American Kenpo bro ught it all back. The martial art itself feels like a genuine and modern self defence system; it is physically challenging and very fulfilling. But this is only half the story. The people I have met as pa rt of this journey have all been fantastic. The camaraderie is second to none and the sense of “team” and being part of something bigger is shared by everyone. The Instructors are also a huge part of this experience and for me, they are the “special sauce” that makes this such a wonderful art to learn. With many decades in the art and a natural ability to teach all ages, Mr and Mrs Mills and t heir Dan Grades make the BKKU stand out for me and I couldn’t recommend them any more.”
PETER BELL
“I started training with the BKKU 8 years ago after a very testy road rage incident where I felt I would not have been able to defend myself should the need have arisen. It has really been an epic journey thus far, I am fitter, have better mental health and confidence, have made some great lifelong friendships and I am much better equipped to deal with these ty pes of problems. I have had to deal with two tricky situations since, and I dealt with them much better than I would’ve done without the world class training Mr and Mrs Mills and th eir team of Instructors provide. If you are looking to learn an exceptional martial art, look n o further than the BKKU and American Kenpo.”
JON HYDON
“As a green belt who has recently earned my black Gi, I feel incredibly proud and grateful for the journey I’ve experienced with the British Kenpo Karate Union. Over the pas t three years of training, I’ve grown not just in my physical abilities, but in my understandi ng of discipline, focus, and the mental resilience required to excel in this self defence bas ed martial art. From day one, the support from both my instructors and fellow students has been incredi ble. It’s like a family! Each new belt has been a stepping stone, not just toward a new level of skill, but toward greater self awareness and confidence. As a female, this increasing co nfidence is so important to me. Something as simple as walking my dog during a dark eve ning is now enjoyable rather than constantly looking over my shoulder feeling unnerved. The training can be demanding, but the sense of achievement after every milestone remin ds me of why I started this journey. I look forward to continuing my journey, growing as a martial Artist and upholding the values that the British Kenpo Karate Union instills in all of it students.”
KAREN NORMAN
“This is more than a karate class, this is family! This is the BKKU! I wish I had started sooner, the skills you learn, the friends you will make, the confidence, I can go on all night. I can’t recommend the BKKU enough. The hardest part is walking through the door.”
KEVIN GREEN
“I started at the BKKU two years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. M r and Mrs Mills are so knowledgeable and at the top of their game in American Kenpo. They not only teach you self defence, but the reasons behind it and why, alongside correct body mechanics and mental agility. Mr and Mrs Mills, alongside their senior students, put 100% into teaching us all this fascinating art. Thank you for letting me be part of this Kenpo family.”
LEE MARKS
“Having been a longtime student of Mr and Mrs Mills, it never occurred to me to review the BKKU. If you are interested in taking up a martial art, look no further! Their skill, knowledge and dedication to passing on their wealth of skill and experience truly is second to non e. Being part of the BKKU family is a journey for life.”
PAUL GREGORY
Being a student of the BKKU has taught me so much over the years, it’s been an absolutely amazing experience and feels like one big family. Hardships and challenges make you want to push yourself further in Kenpo and anyone thinking of joining the BKKU will not regret it. We have amazing instructors that have been training for many years in the art, and it’s absolutely incredible what they can teach you. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending anyone interested in martial arts joining us and becoming a member of our Kenpo family.
